Resources & Frequently Asked Questions
Having questions before you reach out is completely normal, especially if you've never done this before, or if you've tried therapy and it didn't feel like the right fit. I want you to have the information you need to make a decision that feels right for you. If you don't see your question answered here, reach out directly. I'm happy to talk through anything before you commit to anything.
Common Questions About Therapy Services
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If something has felt off for a while - if you're more irritable than you want to be, more exhausted than makes sense, or carrying something you can't seem to put down - that's enough reason to reach out. You don't have to be in crisis. You don't have to have a diagnosis. Most of my clients knew for a while that something needed to change before they finally made the call. If you're asking the question, it's worth a conversation.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is about getting to know each other. I'll ask questions about what's been going on, what your life looks like, and what you're hoping to work on. I won't push for more than you're ready to share. I also try to give you at least one concrete skill or insight before we're done - something useful you can take with you, not just a lot of open loops to sit with until next time.
How do I schedule an appointment?
Start by booking a free 15-minute consultation through the contact form or by calling 720-727-1554. That call gives us a chance to talk briefly, see if it feels like a good fit, and answer any questions you have before scheduling a full session. If you'd prefer to email first, that works too - reach out at Kate@stayingthecoursecounseling.com.
What should I prepare before my first session?
Nothing, really. You don't need to have your history organized, your feelings sorted out, or the right words ready. Come as you are. If there are specific things you want to make sure we cover, jot them down - but even that isn't required. The first session is a conversation, not a presentation.
How long are sessions?
Private pay sessions are 50 minutes. Insurance sessions are 45 or 53 minutes, depending on your plan. Either way, that's enough time to do real work without running over into the rest of your day.
How often do people come to therapy?
Most clients start with weekly sessions, especially early on when we're building momentum and working through something specific. Over time, some clients shift to every other week as things stabilize. We'll figure out what makes sense for you based on your schedule, your goals, and what's actually working.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes - all sessions are conducted via telehealth throughout Colorado. I use SimplePractice, a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform. For most of my clients, telehealth isn't a compromise - it's what makes consistent therapy possible given shift work, unpredictable schedules, and the reality of not having an hour to spare for a commute. You can join from your car, your office, or your home.
What are your hours?
I see clients Monday through Wednesday, 8:00am–3:00pm. I'm closed Thursday through Sunday. If my current availability doesn't work for your schedule, reach out anyway - it's worth a conversation.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and no-shows will be charged an $85 fee. I understand that shift work and unpredictable schedules happen - if something comes up, just let me know as soon as you can.
What are your fees?
The private pay rate is $130 for a 50-minute session. I also accept United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, and BCBS. If you're using insurance, your cost will depend on your specific plan and benefits - I'd recommend calling the number on the back of your insurance card to ask about your mental health coverage before your first session.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. I'm in-network with United Healthcare, Aetna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS). If you have a different insurance plan, you may still be able to use out-of-network benefits - contact your insurance provider to ask about reimbursement options. See the Contact & Fees page for full details.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept all major credit and debit cards, HSA, and FSA cards. Private payment and copayments are collected through Ivy Pay, and Headway is used to bill insurance.
Do you offer faith-based therapy?
Yes. My Christian faith is an important part of who I am, and for clients who want to incorporate a faith-based lens into their work, I'm glad to do that. It's never required or assumed, but it's always available if it matters to you.
Still Have Questions?
You don't have to have everything figured out before you reach out. If something isn't answered here, send me a message or give me a call, I'm happy to talk through anything before you commit to anything. That's what the free consultation is for.
